Sore Prevention & Management
Although
most frequently associated with elderly
patients, pressure sores,
also known as decubitus ulcers, bed sores, or pressure ulcers,
can affect
any person confined to bed or a wheelchair for long periods of
time are are estimated to affect up to 15 percent of all
hospitalized patients and up to 35 percent of nursing home
residents. A pressure sore is a damaged area of skin which
occurs when pressure reduces or cuts off the blood supply to a
particular part of the body for prolonged periods of time.
Pressure sore increase the risk of complications such as serious
infection, and
lead to extensive rehabilitation and hospitalization. These
