  • Development of Modern Nursing- A brief overview of the development of the nursing profession from its beginning with the Protestant Deaconess Movement in early 19th century Europe up until the Civil War which proved to be a watershed in the quest toward professional nursing in the U.S.
  • Edith Cavell-A Norfolk Heroine- One of the most extensive sites on the web concerning Nurse Edith Cavell, (a famous British nurse in WW1), and contains much exclusive material including details about her execution by the Germans for helping allied soldiers while she served as head of a red cross hospital.
  • Florence Nightingale- Good biography of Nightingale, including lots of hyperlinks to help understand her in the context of the people, organizations, and ideas of her time.
  • Florence Nightingale Museum- an international focus for research on the life and work of Florence Nightingale. Biography of Nightingale on web site.
  • History of Frontier Nursing Service- Department of the Interior article traces the history of rural health care nursing from its beginning as the Frontier Nursing Service in 1925 (as an effort to professionalize midwifery in the US) to it's present. Interesting biography of its founder, Mary Breckinridge.
  • History of Public Health Nursing- Informative article from the Missouri Public Health Department that traces the development of Public Health Nursing from its early 1800's beginning in New York to the late 1990's.
  • History of Nursing Slides- Slide presentation from a nursing course at Montgomery County Community College. Good overview of the historical development of nursing.
  • History of the Health Sciences Web Resources-This would serve well as your starting point for serious research-includes biographies of important figures in medical and nursing history.
  • "I had the nickname, `Miss Irish'"- One nurse's aide's story during World War Two. Introduction by Kathryn McCrae, followed by her interview with Marjorie Sullivan.
  • Lane Hospital Training School for Nurses- A facinating look at nurses training circa 1895. The students worked in the hospital seven days a week and were on duty at least twelve hours a day. The first nurses were offered a three-month probationary appointment with-out salary.
  • Men in American Nursing History- Provide an overview of the history of men in nursing with an emphasis on men in the Americas.
  • Midwives and Maternity Care in the Roman World- This article is particular enlightening not only for its detailed discussion of midwives and maternity care, but also because it examines the gap between "professional" care (the midwifes and doctors) and folk medicine.
  • Military Nurses Through History- Articles, sites, and resources describing the  accounts of nurses involved in the military from the days of Nightingale to present.
  • My Aunt, My Hero- The story of Helen Fairchild, RN a nurse in Flanders during the Battle of Passchendaele 1917 who gave her life as a result of her duty.

  • Red Cross Nurses during Franco-Prussian War of 1870- The real life adventures of two of the earliest Red Cross nurses and their experiences staffing field hospitals are recounted. Interesting account and pictures.
  • The History of African-Americans in White-Help enlighten readers regarding the history of early African-American nurse pioneers, their educational struggles and their achievements in the nursing profession
  • The Selected Papers of Margaret Sanger- The Woman Rebel, 1900-1928. The birth control crusader, feminist, and reformer Margaret Sanger was one of the most controversial and compelling figures in the twentieth century. This first volume of The Selected Papers of Margaret Sanger documents the critical phases and influences of an American Icon.
  • UK Centre for the History of Nursing- Provides a focus for nursing history in Europe. Its task is to build awareness of the importance of nursing history through education and research. Worthwhile articles on the site.
  • Women in Healing and The Medical Profession-More than half the people involved in health care are and always have been women. It is only during the recent early modern period that men's names predominate the history of medicine and health care. This article sheds light on the true historical record of women in health care.
  • Why Women should be Nurses and not Doctors- Some nineteenth century reflections that give insights into the two women of their times who spearheaded the nursing profession as well as the admittance of women into medical professions. Helps explain the stereotyping visited on nurses by the medical profession and the wider public that nurses are still striving to overcome these days.
