Although the tradition of
alleviating the sufferings of soldiers is an old one, military
nursing had its beginnings in the Crimean War when Florence
Nightingale began organizing battle nursing and the dispatch of
women as nurses. Military nurses have served as bright examples
in courage and leadership. During the Civil War, more than
five thousand women served as nurses. Their service saved lives
and carved out a place for women in post-war professional
medicine. The U.S. military is committed to education and you'll
have the opportunity to take your education as far as you'd
like, on or off base. Whether you just want to keep your job
skills current, or you want to pursue another college degree,
the military has programs to help you reach your educational
goals.
